Why don't phones let you choose two sounds for notifications?

Choose Two Sounds

  • Choose Primary Sound. I would choose a bold sound.
  • Choose Secondary Sound. I would choose a very subdued sound.

Use Case

Dealing with people who send 10 short lines of text rapidly instead of one statement in paragraph form.
The Primary Sound would be played if it has been more than 5-10 minutes since the last time you said something. This is to get my attention to the chat, potentially even wake me up if needed.

* Oh, somebody said something OK. I'll check it in a second.
The Secondary Sound would be played for every fkn message received within the 5-10min window. Now that the phone is within my focus bubble I don't need full bore sound effects. Just do a super passive donk sound until they leave me alone for long enough.

* FFS they are still going? I'll wait till it stops.
You should be able to configure the time window to be any value you want. Bonus points if per contact because I got some guys I would totally set to 1 hour timeout.
As it is right now, at least on iOS, every single message that comes in plays the selected sound effect, and if another message from the same guy comes in before that sound even finishes, sometimes it cuts the sound off and restarts it, sometimes it layers it on top. Both cases are infuriating. It's 2025 and nobody at Apple has heard of debouncing?
